Border exception for students

Students can enter New Zealand if they are eligible under the following border exception:

1,000 new and returning students 
Border class exception for 1,000 international students | Education New Zealand 

NOTE

Students must not request to travel to New Zealand until instructed to do so by their education provider.

Students must be nominated by their education provider and the Ministry of Education before requesting to travel to New Zealand. If you are nominated, you will still need to meet the requirements of the student visa category you apply under to be granted a visa.

You must meet New Zealand’s border entry requirements. This includes completing any required stay in managed isolation or quarantine and period of self-isolation on arrival in New Zealand.

Studying online while outside New Zealand

If you are outside New Zealand you can study online without a visa. Once border restrictions are lifted you can apply for a student visa to continue your study in New Zealand. Evidence of your online study supports your visa application. You still must meet standard student visa requirements to get a student visa.
